What is Reiki?

Reiki is a complementary, safe energy healing technique which promotes harmony, balance, clarity and well-being.  Relax on a massage table, you remain comfortably clothed and covered with a light blanket and an optional eye pillow.  Then it’s time for you to drift off or tune into the soothing music and simply let go while the hands-on Reiki session tops up your life force and gives you whatever you need in this moment.

Reiki is painless, non-manipulative, non-invasive and does not interfere with any form of medical treatment.

I expected the Reiki session to be relaxing, which it definitely was, but I also had some amazing results within the first week - sleeping better, feeling more relaxed and this morning I woke feeling really positive feelings about the future. Most importantly the health issue I was struggling with has completely ceased. All this after one session!! Thank you so much for being such a kind, generous and intuitive Reiki practitioner. Deb

Recently my husband was admitted to hospital with a florid septis in his blood which attacked his heart and eventually shut down his kidneys.  He was a very sick man and I was told he may not pull through.  He was admitted on 09 Dec and on 22 Dec Sue Marx offered to do some long distance Reiki.  Up until this point we had not had any good days in relation to my husband. Sue performed the Reiki that evening and this is the text I received from my husband the next morning -

"My night I am happy to say was very good.  I slept deeply for 3.5 hours, got up for 2 hours and went back to bed and slept deeply until 6.45am.  My catheter has now been removed and my Blood Sugars are in the normal range.  All the blood cultures are negative."

What more can I say?!  Sue has been intermittently performing LD Reiki on both my husband and myself and the results have been nothing but positive.  For those that may be sceptical I (we) urge you to open your mind and heart and try it.  I can't recommend Sue highly enough, thank you Sue.

Sue is a thoughtful and intuitive Reiki practitioner. Her gentle approach had me feeling better after just one session. The change was immediately evident; such a relief.

I have never had a Reiki Session before, and Sue immediately made me feel very comfortable and relaxed. As time went by, I started to feel that Sue's gentle touch was simulataneously on many areas of my body, which was deeply relaxing and pleasant. I also felt quite a lot of warmth in my arms, which was lovely as I generally feel chilly. My feeling of calmness lasted throughout the day and I slept particularly well that night. My reason for having Reiki was to help with a health issue and I'm delighted to say that although I was informed it could take between 6 and 12 months to clear up, I'm already much improved after only a couple of months. I would highly recommend seeing Sue for her professional, intuitive and positive approach.

I had been suffering from headaches, shoulder, neck and back pain for just over a month and to ease my pain I was needing Ibuprofen to manage and get through each day (I generally avoid taking tablets). I engaged Sue to possibly help with some Reiki. As she began, I felt peaceful as she touched each part of my body where I felt pain. I slept well that night for the first time in a long time, and the next day all the symptoms had eased and I no longer had any headaches. I felt so relieved and more energised and no longer needed Ibuprofen. I highly recommend Sue for Reiki. Thank you Sue

I initially booked Reiki with Sue Marx to increase my general energy levels, lift my mood and help my body heal after cancer treatment. The Reiki treatment sessions were amazing. I was surprised by how my body reacted with lots of involuntary limb movements while the energy moved through. I came away feeling energised and everything around me seemed so much clearer. I was relaxed and felt able to cope with anything. Thanks Sue.

Thank you Sue, for the wonderful Reiki Session.  I had no idea what to expect.  It was so relaxing and peaceful.  And even though my eyes were closed I was so aware of the serene environment overlooking the trees, hearing the birds, and the lovely smells of incense.  The perfect package.  I would highly recommend you to anyone considering trying this practice.  Thank you so much.

I was suffering from a migraine when Sue performed Reiki. I fell asleep afterwards and awoke with the migraine gone. I believe the Reiki contributed to cutting the intensity and length of the migraine. I also did not feel totally washed out the next day. You will immediately relax in Sue’s hands as you feel her caring and competent energy. If you are considering Reiki then I highly recommend Sue.

LEARN MORE ABOUT REIKI

The word Reiki is a Japanese name consisting of two words “Rei” (Universal or Spiritual) and “Ki” (Life Force or Energy).  So Reiki means Universal Life Force or Spiritual energy.  Everything, including plants, animals and people contain this Life Force Energy.  It is the very foundation of life itself.

The origins of Reiki are difficult to validate, although it is thought that the history of Usui Reiki begins with its founder, Dr Mikao Usui who was born into a wealthy Buddhist family in 1865.  Dr Usui’s family was able to give their son a well-rounded education for the time. As a child, Dr. Usui studied in a Buddhist monastery where he was taught martial arts, swordsmanship, and the Japanese form of Chi Kung, known as Kiko.

Throughout his education, Dr. Usui had an interest in medicine, psychology and theology. It was this interest that prompted him to seek a way to heal himself and others using the laying on of hands. It was his desire to find a method of healing that was unattached to any specific religion and religious belief, so that his system would be accessible to everyone.

Dr. Usui travelled a great deal during his lifetime. He studied healing systems of all types and held different professions including reporter, secretary, missionary, public servant and guard. Finally, he became a Buddhist priest/monk and lived in a monastery.

Sometime during his years of training in the monastery, Dr Usui attended his own training rediscovery course in a cave on Mount Kurama.  For 21 days, Dr Usui fasted, meditated and prayed. On the morning of the twenty-first day, Dr Usui experienced an event that would change his life forever. He saw ancient Sanskrit symbols that helped him develop the system of healing he had been struggling to invent. Usui Reiki was born.

After his spiritual awakening on Mount Kurama, Dr Usui established a clinic for healing and teaching in Kyoto.  As the practice of Usui Reiki was spreading, Dr Usui became known for his healing practice.  Mikao Usui founded his first Reiki clinic and school in Tokyo in 1922.  In 1923 Tokyo was struck with a large earthquake, over 140,000 deaths were reported.  It was the greatest natural disaster in Japanese history.  The demand for Reiki healing was enormous during this time and his work became quite famous and well recognises.  In 1925 he opened up a larger school/clinic. While travelling for work, his students coped with the demand.

Before he died in 1926 Dr Usui taught his system of healing to over 2000 people and initiated 17 to a higher level (known as Masters in the West). This ensured his his system would not be forgotten.  Among them was Dr Chujiro Hayashi, a former naval officer who set up a Reiki clinic in Tokyo.

Dr Hayashi is credited with further developing the Usui system of Reiki by adding hand positions to more thoroughly cover the body.  Dr Hayashi also changed and refined the attunement process. Using his improved system, Dr Hayashi trained several more Reiki Masters, including a woman named Hawayo Takata.

Reiki spreads to the West

 Mrs Hawayo Takata was a Japanese-American, she was in Tokyo in 1935 as she was very ill and in need of surgery, but she strongly felt through her instinct that she didn’t need surgery to be healed. After asking her doctor about alternative treatments for her condition, she was told about the Reiki practitioner in town.  Mrs Takata made an appointment, although she was slightly sceptical as she had never heard of Reiki.  Following her initial meeting with Dr. Hayashi, Mrs. Takata saw Dr. Hayashi on a daily basis. She found the sessions to be relaxing and pleasant and, ultimately, healing.

As time passed, Mrs. Takata learned Reiki I and Reiki II.  She made changes to her Reiki practice, then used Reiki to help heal others when she returned to her home in the United States. Much of this happened near the beginning of World War II.

When she died, she had attuned 22 Reiki masters. Modern Reiki is becoming more popular around the world as time goes on, and the lineage of Reiki masters is growing every day.  With the return to Usui Reiki, many people are using this traditional hands on therapy to heal themselves and others.

The genius of Reiki is that practitioners who have been attuned to the Reiki energy can utilize Reiki to help heal themselves thus improving their own wellness and enhancing their well-being – and in fact, working on self-healing is a prerequisite for offering Reiki healing to others.  Modern Reiki Practitioners can offer the Reiki energy to others through gentle static light pressure touch using the specific traditional Reiki hand positions, however Reiki energy can even be passed over long distances.

Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has been effective in helping many illnesses and maladies and always creates a beneficial effect as it is for the highest good. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.

Reiki is not dependent on a receiver’s intellectual capacity or spiritual development and therefore is available to everyone.  While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion. There is nothing you must believe in order to receive Reiki as Reiki is not dependent on belief at all so it will work whether you believe in it or not. However, many religious people find that using Reiki puts them more in touch with the experience of their religion rather than having only an intellectual concept of it.

Although Reiki is not a religion, it is still important to live and act in a way that promotes harmony with others.

A Reiki treatment will take about 60-90 minutes. Clients simply relax on a massage table (or chair for those who may have difficulty lying down).

A treatment may feel like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing. Many have reported miraculous results.

**Please enquire if requiring to book a time for a distance healing for yourself or a loved one.  Distance Reiki treatment is ideal for those who may wish to receive Reiki but who may be too ill to visit my rooms or needing a treatment while away etc **

The below is taken from the Australian Reiki Connection (of which I am a Member) and was first written in 2008 by Wendy Joy Smith, President, founder and lifetime member.

Much has been written, by many distinguished scholars of Reiki, about what Reiki is, but there are still many people who have not been able to find the words that resonate with their own experiences of this hands on healing technique. I find that sometimes words still escape me.

It is the vitality you can feel when all is going well; it is the energy you feel when sitting still, under a tree; it is the energy of prayer; it is the feeling of being centred even when confronting anger, or negativity. It is like the feeling of warm drink going down, when you feel it go all the way down on a cold night. Or the cold drink on a hot summer night. The energy you feel when sitting on the beach with the water gently rolling over you, energy can be experienced in any of these ways.

The depletion of energy can be felt too, if we are attuned to feeling it. Reiki will restore the feelings of wholeness and wellness, but the experience of Reiki is unique to the individual. It can be felt as heat, cold, tingling, vibration, but often one will feel sleepiness. Whatever the feelings though Reiki will be of benefit.

Yes, it is an experiential thing, one must feel in order to know, and talking about it does not do it justice. Yet one must find the words to adequately discuss Reiki, when questioned by anyone new to energy work. So, what do you say? What is this energy that enlivens me, what is it about Reiki that soothes me, or brings me back to centre? It is the energy of creation I believe, the energy that sparks one into existence, that one can easily deplete in this day and age just by the mere practice of going to work, being the family taxi, or just plain doing too much. It is the feeling of replenishment, the feeling one gets when all is well.

In today’s world we are beginning to see modern medicine and many older forms of healing unite. In particular, it is common for the terms East and West thinking, coming together to be discussed. In the East the concept of energy running throughout the body has been mapped out for around 5000 years. This concept has been not so prominent in Western thinking, where the focus has been on healing the physical. Yet, within our thinking we have the language of energy. Energy is within and around us, but perhaps you do not think of it that way; just think of the language you use if you have had a long day, I’m drained of energy, or so and so just used up all my energy. This lost energy will of course be replaced over time if you recognise that you should rest, eat well, exercise etc.

Reiki is a simple way of stopping energy loss, and of replenishing energy in a loving way, for yourself anytime, wherever you are, it will be there for you. You don’t have to feel drained or ill for Reiki to be of benefit to you though. It can be likened to meditation for oneself, without having to stress out over whether you can or cannot meditate. I feel one must re-evaluate what it is to be well.

Modern Western medical thought is beginning, it would appear, to bring about a change in consciousness, to allow the notion that how one is feeling in body mind and spirit has an impact on how the body will heal. It is now recognised that laughter is extremely beneficial for the healing of body mind and spirit.

So, with the concept of physical healing we can integrate energy healing, to promote total body mind spirit healing. Reiki is a healing art that is simple, unobtrusive, complementary, soothing, and wont interfere with existing medical treatment. It is so beneficial that many hospitals accept it, along with other forms of hands on work, we can only benefit from Reiki treatments. Reiki has been tested many times on various medical equipment, all going to support the fact that Reiki among other things, can:

  • Increase the haematocrit values in the blood;
  • Increase the healing rate of wounds;
  • Reduce pain;
  • Induce a relaxing state of mind;

The list can just go on and on.

A Reiki treatment will quite often send a friend to sleep; this is probably what is in order, to shut down the responses, so the body can take refuge in silence. Many people have said to me, Oh, that Reiki, it doesn’t really do anything, it just sends me to sleep.” To which I reply, “well is that what you needed, were you stressed, tired, run down?” We do need to stop and rest, if we don’t we use even more energy. Sometimes we expect miracles or lights, bangs and whistles, the answer could be as basic as, in the body’s hierarchy of needs that sleep is of the highest priority. On subsequent treatments, one’s perceived body needs will be addressed, however not always according to our expectations. For I have seen, some who do not see any benefits from Reiki, yet go on to make life changes, and improve their way of life. Reiki may not even be given a thought, but it may have been the trigger to get the change of thought processes into gear. Reiki often works beyond our scope of comprehension.
